From the Needs Analysis

Profile of the Classes and Students

Nature of the classes and the students

In both Grade 9 and Grade 6 classes at York International School, students primarily originate from the Gampaha district and possess a bilingual background, with Sinhala as their primary language. The Grade 9 classroom, comprising three male and two female students, is currently preparing for the G.C.E Ordinary Level Examination scheduled for 2025. Their English proficiency levels generally range between UTEL benchmark level 4-5 and CEFR B1, with a preference for activities encompassing receptive skills such as reading and listening, as well as productive skills like speaking and writing. Likewise, the Grade 6 class, composed of five male and seven female students, exhibits bilingualism and a predilection for activities emphasizing productive skills. Their English proficiency levels typically fall between UTEL benchmark level 4-5 and CEFR A2.

Procedure for English lessons throughout the week

During the school week, both Grade 6 and Grade 9 students at York International School participate in English language and literature lessons. Teachers maintain copywriting books to enhance students' handwriting, fostering regular practice. Moreover, students develop their creative writing skills by completing one weekly essay, documented in dedicated essay books. Every Friday, an English Literacy Association session is held, dedicated to improving students' speaking proficiency and overall language skills.
